Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA

Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA

60 Blade Chainsaw

Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA is an American Imperial/Double IPA brewed by the Dogfish Head brewing Company in Milton, Delaware. It is monstrously built with a vicious amount of Two-Row English Barley and continuously hopped with Amarillo, Warrior and Mystery Hop X Hops for a bone crushing 9% ABV and a twisted 90 IBU count.

Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA

On the morning of July 4th I was looking through my traffic stats for bestbeerbuzz.com and was amazed at the thousands of visitors that found my website through stumbleupon.com. Thousands more continued to visit over the next several days and many took the time to fill out the contact sheet at the bottom of some of my pages. Upon asking for beer recommendations, there was an overwhelming response for the Dogfish Head 60, 90 and 120 Minute IPAs.

With a horny sense of excitement and anticipation, I ran to the liquor store to pick up a six pack of these brews and chainsaw the night. The prices I found for these selections were shocking! At a time when a six pack of Bud costs $5.99, a six pack of the 60 Minute IPA cost $9.99, a 4 Pack of the 90 Minute IPA cost $9.99, and one…. that’s 1 12 ounce bottle of the 120 Minute IPA for $7.99!!!! Man, you guys have expensive tastes!

Being the diplomat I am, I chose the middle selection with the 90 Minute IPA, but knowing my hunger for overconsumption, I wouldn’t be satisfied with the four pack so I dropped 20 bucks for eight beers! I am one cheap bastard.

Onto The Method

8.5/10 – The Classic

2.0 – Appearance – Pours a rich dark golden hue that dances with wild carbonation forming a substantial off-white head that remains alive throughout the serve. The lacing creates webs of art through the sides of the glass.

2.0 – Aroma – Powerful alcoholic vapors dive into the air from the initial serve and blend in with the tingly aroma becoming characteristic of the warrior hop. A deep woodsy earth fragrance compliments the citrus and pine aromas.

1.5 – Taste – A strong, gin like alcohol strength commands its authority and forces the potent hop definition balanced by an equally strong English malt base to take a back seat. The strength of the booze is highly evident and robs the show that belonged to an artful balance of the malt and the hop.

1.5 – Palate – The burning alcohol disposition cuts through all ingredients making for a sharp and thin body over an otherwise smooth dispositionDogfish Head 90 Minute IPA.

1.5 – Overall – Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA was built to impress and overpower. The tremendous bitterness of the multiple hops, including the almighty and impressive warrior hop balances an amazingly complex English malt base. The complimentary relationship between this perfect orchestra is challenged by an alcoholic presence that is undeniably overstated.

10/10 Blades – The Hammer – the booze –The alcohol is this beer’s most powerful presence. At 9% ABV, combined with its smooth drinkability make for a shocking crush to the senses.

10/10 Blades – The Knife –digestibility – This sharp blade comes pre-digested and ready to jump into action without a minute effort in the part of the body.

10/10 Blades – The Spider – the lift – An exotic and surreal rise begins quickly at the end of the first serve. A strong sense of dementia and psychological surrender begins as the imbiber is left at the mercy and control of the high.

0.0/10 Blades – The Motor –can you handle it? –Having drank al four beers at a party, I ultimately lost control of my motor skills, started saying inappropriate things to pregnant women, lost my thoughts in the middle of sentences and passed out on a hammock for hours – waking up to an entirely different crowd of people. What’s worse, I had an unrealistic, unrelenting and completely stupid inclination to drive home for two hours with what amounted to severe intoxication. Thankfully, my hosts hid my keys and offered me a room with a bed, which in the end was a sweet alternative to prison or death.

The Chainsaw

21.5.0/50 Blades – The Buzz – I experimented with Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA at home after bathing an infant and a toddler, feeding them, soothing the infant’s cries and finally getting them to bed. By the time I had my first beer, I had a week of work on my shoulders, an evening of parenting and an overwhelming exhaustion from life. The power of Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA knocked me out after just three bottles. As I thought about writing the review, my wife suggested that I was too tired to give it the justice it deserved and that it should be tried at a party where the chainsaw belongs. Being the wise woman that she is, and fate having brought an event to my attention, this Saturday had just the right life ingredients for experimentation.

Bringing Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA to a party might have been a big mistake. Now, I know that having started the morning touring a brewery with several high octane tastings in Brooklyn might have been a bad start. And yes, my host is notorious for getting people liquored up with a half dozen festive tequila shots per guest. But Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA knocked me out the previous night, and I could feel its signature vibe continuously and repetitively rape my tolerance. What was worse is that I saw myself acting in this way but was powerless to stop it – joking inappropriately with people I just met, losing the thoughts in my brain as my mouth kept moving with nonsense and showering saliva, and out of nowhere I began to feel as if driving home in this state was a good idea.

I often joke about how a beer was built with murderous intent, but this was exactly the type of situation that would have killed in a very real way. I’m fortunate to have good friends that hid my keys and let me stay the night. Of course, they knew it all along. After many years of not seeing that group of people, I’m still that guy.

Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA is a serious beer that flirts with being hard liquor – held back only because it is a product of fermentation. I looked down at the hugely expensive four packs in the past, however with the quality and the power of this brew, you get your money’s worth. But… you’ve been warned.
